October 18, 2011 By barrie@compassdesigns.net Leave a Comment

Have you heard this latest news in and around the world of Joomla? New releases, cool events, World Usability Day, and much more in this edition!

Joomla 1.5.24 was released on October 17. This is a security release, so be sure to update your sites. JUpdateManager or Admin Tools are two great ways to get this update done.

Joomla 1.7.2 was also released on October 17, and it’s also a security release. Joomla now offers easy updates from within its core. Here’s a tutorial for moving from 1.6 to 1.7, but the instructions for moving within versions of 1.7 are exactly the same.

K2’s highly anticipated release is just about to happen. Laughing Their new website is posted and the release candidate for Joomla 1.7 is available now. Fotis promises a release by 11 AM Eastern time.

Time is running out to vote for Joomla for Packt’s Open Source Awards.

Don’t forget about Joomla Day New York City, happening this weekend!

JoomStew has a great podcast up from Joomla Day Austin, which happened last month. Jen is one of the hosts for this edition. This podcast focuses on website planning, as well as interviews with Joomla developers, migrating to 1.7, and much more.

Finally, keep a lookout for World Usability Day, coming to an area near you!

World Usability Day happens each year on the second Thursday in November (this year, November 10). Events are organized around the world – over 140 events this year! – featuring great speakers and a focus on usability. This is not a Joomla-specific event, but it’s a great way to improve your overall design skills.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Jen and Barrie’s corner of the world, you can attend World Usability Day New England! Register by Friday for $30 or until the event for $40. Speakers come from usability leading institutions like Landmark College, University of Buffalo, and Staples, and topics focus on A/B testing, assistive technology, social media and students, designing optimal customer experiences, and much more!
