Many businesses and organizations are still figuring out the process to get a professional web presence on the web. With social media now firmly in the mainstream, it’s harder than ever to understand what’s needed and what’s not as you build out an online web presence. These new layers mean that many businesses are returning to web “designers” to help them. Even though there is less and less design involved. More on that later.

Converting From Joomla to WordPress

wordpress-logo-notext-rgbWith a new focus on pure blogging, I have decided to convert compassdesigns.net from a Joomla site to WordPress. In several previous posts I have talked about WordPress is the better platform for blogging, but Joomla is better if you want to easily add a wider range of features. Through its various incarnations, compassdesigns.net has had forums, social networks, downloads and ebook sales.

Now, however, it’s going to be pure blogging. Just me, my thoughts and the 8 people that listen to me out there.

Can Gmail Get You a Job?

Over the last few months I have had the privilege of serving on two hiring committees. As I did so, I noticed that what email address someone had, could make a difference to how their application was treated. Let’s face it, it’s a tough job market out there right now, and people should give themselves every advantage they can!

Teaching Sells Re-Opening

One of the best online business models for these tough times is about to open again for membership – Teaching Sells.

We all know how much information is out there about starting an online-based business. Systems. Tricks. Gimmicks. Teaching Sells from Brian Clark is definitely not one of those.

They believe that creating a thriving business is a technique you can learn, not some kind of “gift” you have to be born with.

World Usability Day, November 10

World Usability Day is coming up on November 10, 2011. There’s likely to be an event near you, or you could participate in an online event.

If you’re in New England, be sure to check out World Usability Day New England. There are great speakers attending, including Tom McCan, the director of retail usability research at Staples. For $30, you get a full day of great networking, interesting speakers, and new ideas you can apply to your own sites.
